Four Winds
By: Carleen Phillips

Wabun, Spirit Keeper of the East
of birth, youth and Spring
You play on heightened wings
Your sharp eagle’s eyes
turns our vision outward
We seek to improve and soar
on wings of our own truth

Shawnodese, Spirit Keeper of the South
and teacher of all
You are the cunning, sly coyote
You show us who we are
and what we may become
You give us hard lessons
and even harder love

Mudjekeewis, Great Bear
Spirit Keeper of the West
You are strength
our inner search
We tap into your knowledge
and make it our wisdom
as life lays out our path

Waboose, Spirit Keeper of the North
You come to us with pictures pure
as white hide
O Great Buffalo
You turn our sight within
and prepare us for rebirth

as the Medicine Wheel turns,
as life cycles,
fading,
and beginning anew.
