The View from Here
By Mary Hudock

Another year breathes

Its way through me--

A fierce wind battling

The blood in my veins.

From this distance

Through time

Through space

I see your walking stick

Wooden and knarled

Scaling the side of that hill

Craggy, brambled, and newly spring green

Rising above the copper stream.

You are the strong poet.

There is nothing you can't write about.

I see it all again

And know that I can't step

In the same river twice.

But nothing will stop me from trying.

My head aches with wondering

Why "time marches on"

Stamping its heavy boots

Over my brittle back.
