Review of Virginity Or Death! Virginity or Death! By Katha Pollitt ISBN: 0-8129-7638-X Virginity or Death! is a thumbnail history of America from early 2001 through early 2006 – a feminist left-wing history. This collection of Katha Pollitt columns from The Nation is a must-read and must-have for anyone who wants to understand where the Left, particularly feminists, have been for the past five years. Sometimes ironic, witty or in your face, Pollitt’s style shines through in each essay. What can (should?) be considered common sense solutions to major issues are presented in fewer than four pages per idea. Letters to colleagues and other individuals in the public eye lend a more personal voice to issues that have long been packaged in media shrink wrap and sound bites. This volume makes it easier for current fans of The Nation to find favorite Pollitt zingers, or can be an introduction to both the author and magazine. Beyond use in Women’s Studies, this book would of interest to Political Science, Sociology, American History, and Journalism instructors – the latter for examples of op-ed writing. |
