Review of Atheist Manifesto: The Case Against Christianity, Judaism and Islam By Michel Onfray ISBN: 1559708204 Atheist Manifesto is a thorough and accurate deconstruction of the three book religions. Michel Onfray attempts a secular scholarly evaluation of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, succeeding as well as is theoretically possible while these religions are still actively observed en masse. Well researched, this text is an excellent primer for serious scholarly analysis of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, in that order. Onfray’s work clearly emphasizes Christianity, but his treatment of Judaism and Islam offers excellent starting points for future scholars. Detractors may attempt to point out the lack of information on the “good works” of these religions, but any such works pale in comparison to the atrocities committed in the name of these faiths. It has been rightly observed that no scholarly work of this kind has appeared since Nietzsche, and Onfray’s historical place in the objective study of religion cannot be denied. Although his repeated contention that religious faith is a symptom of mass neuroses may be difficult for some readers to accept, the philosophical and historical findings in Atheist Manifesto cannot be denied. This text is a long overdue addition to the body of atheist scholarship. |
