Review of The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid By Bill Bryson ISBN: 0-7679-1936-X How to make history interesting? That has been the timeless question of History teachers for as long as there has been a history to teach. Bill Bryson offers an entertaining history of his own life, intermingled with bits of historical interest. The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid is a page-turner for anyone who enjoys humorous writing, but a potpourri of potential classroom readings for teachers struggling to find something enticing for students of mid-twentieth century American History. As usual, there are many silent snicker and laugh out loud moments in Bryson’s tale of growing up in the Midwest. His description of the split between the kid and adult worlds of the 1950s and 1960s is a wonderful reminder of the perpetual generation gap – particularly since it can help adults remember that chasm they crossed when looking at the gaping hole between them and their own kids today. The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid is a delightful read. Bill Bryson remains a master of spinning humorous tales while imparting tidbits of useful information. |
