Review of “Judith Butler: Philosophical Encounters of the Third Kind”
“Judith Butler: Philosophical Encounters of the Third Kind” can be considered an excellent introduction to the work and philosophy of a woman who has tried to avoid and often combat societal “pigeon-holing” based on gender and sexuality. First Run/Icarus Films has presented educators and students of feminist theory with an excellent resource for in classroom use, or simply for a thumbnail summary of Butler’s philosophy. From her theoretically anti-feminist interpretations of Cindy Sherman’s photography, admitting the importance of portraying vulnerability of women, to her desire to break down stereotypical analyses of gender roles, Butler continually skirts the borders created by other feminist thinkers. As stated in the film, Butler does not attempt to draw lines or parallels between her works – they are part of an ongoing process. This film illustrates her assertion, offering viewers a small sampling of Butler’s diverse interests and studies. For librarians, philosophy, and women’s studies instructors, “Judith Butler: Philosophical Encounters of the Third Kind” should be considered a needed addition to their collections. |
