Yours By Sheila McLaughlin Sikorski thanks to Lucille Clifton I know you have the power-- you grasp my life, my death, under your wisp of a gown. I just wanted to see those orange mountains, pink clouds, the shape of each animal; feel the spiral shell I'll bring to you and your warm skin by my cheek; sniff the honeysuckle on the breeze; hear words in those muffled songs. I wanted to know how I'd move by my own power, through these sinews now forming. I'm a part of you, partly you, not you, but you have all the power, I know. It's just I heard a story, somewhere: one of us held on and, 40 years later, gave her mother a kidney. You have power--please do not give up. |
