Review of Lions at Lamb House
By Edwin M. Yoder, Jr.
ISBN: 978-1-933372-34-1

With the multitude of books that are released each season, it is still rare to find one that can be categorized as an instant literary classic. Edwin M. Yoder, Jr.’s leap into historical fiction with Lions at Lamb House is that one in many.

Yoder explores what would have happened if Henry James had been analysed by the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. Told from the perspective of Horace Briscoe, young doctoral candidate preparing his thesis on the works of James, the circumstances of this almost unimaginable pairing is a thoroughly enjoyable trip through time.

Written in turns, from straight narrative, to epistles, to journal entries of the principle characters, Lions is as close as one can get to crawling into the minds of James and Freud. While they seem potential sparring partners at the beginning of the tale, as Freud spends more time in the James household, he finds himself unwittingly pulled in as a fellow conspirator with both Briscoe and James, in the name of love. The two older gentlemen who would normally remain at odds find themselves joining together to aid young Briscoe in winning the hand of a lady – and in maintaining their own good reputations.

In spite of the fact that each man’s philosophy is the antithesis of the other’s, Yoder manages to reach an amiable balance between them. This tale of gentlemanly scholars could only be created by one of their own kind, and Edwin M. Yoder, Jr. is decidedly one. Lions at Lamb House will be useful in Literature, History and Psychology classrooms, and a welcome addition to the collection of any reader with even a slight interest in Henry James or Sigmund Freud.
