Review of Down to a Sunless Sea By Mathias B. Freese ISBN-10: 1578367335 Down to a Sunless Sea is a collection of gothic tales that draw readers in to facets of life that typically cause an involuntary glance to the ground or anywhere else to avoid viewing them. Mathias B. Freese proves yet again that he is not only unafraid of, but also extremely adept at placing disturbing characters and concepts on the page. From showing that man can be worse than a wild animal when it comes to brutality in “Chatham Bear”, to a scenario of revenge through grave robbery and desecration in “Juan Peron’s Hands”, Freese explores the darker side of human nature in sometimes excruciating detail. “I’ll Make It, I Think”, “Little Errands” and “Echo” illustrate various forms of broken people – from physically disabled, to battling mental disorders that make everyday tasks a heavy burden. This collection will be of interest to instructors in sociology, psychology, and creative writing. The wide variety of writing techniques will be of particular interest to the latter. Mathias B. Freese has succeeded in offering readers an excellent collection of short stories that have the power to elicit strong feelings – albeit sometimes uncomfortable. Down to a Sunless Sea is an excellent choice for readers who enjoy character studies and dark humor. |
