Review of Words of a Feather:
A Humorous Puzzlement of Etymological Pairs

By Murray Suid
ISBN-13: 978-0-07-147721-5

An extreme love of words, and a fascination with their roots and connections to each other led Murray Suid to offer readers a wonderful collection of etymological pairs that both entertain and educate. Words of a Feather is a delightful collection of explanations why words that normally wouldn’t be considered related, actually are.

Given the current situation with the oil industry, it would be nice to think that the words “chaos” and “gasoline” are related, and Suid explains why. Being a leader is known to age a person, and proof of the relation between “coronation” and “coroner” add a little more to the argument that leading a nation can take years off one’s life. The relationship between “flatulence” and “inflation” can be the basis for some amusing thoughts about the economy, while pairing “senile” and “senate” can place political foibles in perspective.

Words of a Feather is a must-have for any avid reader, writer, educator, or anyone with the slightest bit of curiosity about the origins of everyday words. Educators will find many fun ways to help students remember the words included, or just plain have fun in the classroom. It can only be hoped that Suid continues his research, so he can offer readers more volumes in the future.
